Polybutylene is a kind of plastic material used to build pipes, commonly used between 1975-1995 because it was cheap, flexible, and easy to install. But, what happens with it? or why you should change it? let’s have a look.
After years, polybutylene proved to be a very bad material, because it reacts to a lot of chemicals commonly used to clean our homes like chlorine. What happens is that the reactions create micro fractures in the pipes causing leaks with the pass of the years. So if you found polybutylene pipes inside your property we recommend you to replace them, because with time it can cost you a lot of money because of the serious damage it may cause.
The first thing you need to know is that PB only was installed as water supply lines. You commonly find it attached to your sinks, toilets, water heater, etc. You won’t find them as drains, vent pipes, or waste.
Another place were polybutylene pipes were used was main water lines, but is harder to identify if your home has it or not, but, if you find polybutylene pipes inside your home, your chances of having it in your mainline are very high.
The pipes are ½”, ¾” or 1”, flexible and commonly gray or blue, but the color also could be cream, black, or silver. Almost all the PB pipes have a stamp on the side that says “PB2110” this is the principal way to know that you have PB.
The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (InterNACHI) recommends that all homes with polybutylene pipes should replace them with other piping like PEX. We know this could be expensive, but, for sure it will be cheaper than having to repair all the damages it can cause like leaking or burst.
